Update: The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner has reported that hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease were determined to be the official cause of Nick Menza’s death.

Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza’s death came as a shock to all of us. The legendary drummer died onstage May 21, and according to TMZ, the autopsy points to a massive heart attack.

Menza died at the age of 51 in Los Angeles while playing with his band OHM. Heart failure was the expected cause and law enforcement is now reportedly corroborating that story. TMZ reports that autopsy results determined that drugs had nothing to do with Menza’s death and that signs point to heart disease. Sources close to Menza also reportedly claim the drummer had been sober for roughly eight years before his passing.

After spending nearly a decade with Megadeth, Menza came back for a brief stint with the thrash greats in 2004. Since then, he’s worked on a number of smaller-scale projects. In one of Menza’s final interviews, he spoke about how he missed performing for massive crowds. “I miss it,” Menza told The Wave. “I miss the playing part of it, very much so, in front of the big crowds and just rocking people and having people come up afterwards. That’s the only part of it I miss.”

According to Blabbermouth, sources who attended Menza’s final show described the moments after the drummer collapsed. “It appeared to be a seizure but [Nick] stopped breathing,” the source said. “Two patrons took over and began CPR until EMS arrived. EMS worked on him for 25-plus minutes, including adrenaline shots, three shocks and non-stop compressions.”

Stay tuned for more updates on Nick Menza as news continues to break.
