Michael Gibson’s Spoiler Free Review of Captain Marvel
When Captain Marvel was announced as an upcoming movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was a lot of excitement. When actress Brie Larson was announced to play the hero, some groaned but was accepted for the most part. When the first trailer come out, you would have thought Marvel had punched everyone in the gut and laughed as they fell to the floor.
This is when the internet sucks.
Troll after troll after troll came out bashing a movie based on a two minute preview. They declared it a disaster. They declared it a feminist movie. They declared it the worst movie ever made. Again, based on a two minute preview.
Well, March 8, Captain Marvel hit theaters. In fact, it had the second biggest opening in all of the Marvel movies worldwide, only behind last year's Avengers: Infinity War.
I saw it Sunday, and let me tell you, it's a fantastic movie. So good, that I'm putting it at number six on my favorites of the MCU so far. It is funny, great action and that two minute preview that everyone was bitching about, doesn't give away a single thing that the movie is about. There were surprises all throughout the two hour run time.
Were there some "girl power" moments? Of course. But those moments weren't forced nor did we get preached to like seems to happen so much lately.
There was a lot of set up for Avengers: Endgame coming out April 26. So yeah, this movie was meant for us to get to know Captain Marvel before she assists the Avengers as they, hopefully, defeat Thanos and reverse his snap from Infinity War.
I do have a couple of complaints about the movie but discussing them would spoil portions of the movie and I'm not going to do that if you haven't seen it yet.
All in all, go see Captain Marvel. Well worth the time and money. So much so, that I will see it again next weekend.
- Stan Lee makes his usual cameo early in Captain Marvel. Obviously, this was filmed before he passed away. However, there is a another tribute to Stan that made me tear up...a lot. Stan Lee will always be missed.
