If you think Texas is in the United States, you'd be correct. If you said that Texas is somewhere in England, you'd ALSO be correct. Yes not only are we the 28th state in the union, but before we became part of the U.S., we were (and still are) indeed a part of London in the UK.

Why is there a piece of Texas in London?

If you travel to 4 St James's St in London, you'll find a plaque that says "Texas Legislation", also called the "Republic of Texas Plaque".

So the question is...why? Why was Texas in the UK in the first place? Well the answer involves...war. More specifically, the United States-Mexican War in the mid 1800s. While both countries fought for control over Texas, from 1836-1845, Sam Houston (who was the President of Texas at the time) sent the Secretary of State, Dr. Ashbel Smith, to establish an embassy to receive support from England. The funny part was this particular established just so happened to above a wine shop

When Texas became part of the United States in 1845, the people left for America, leaving the embassy (and bill for the rent!) behind in England. However, the plaque remained and is still there to this day.

However there would be others signs of Texas that you can find in London, and vice versa. For example there's a BBQ place you can find called Texas Joe's. There's a town in Texas called "London", located in Kimball County.

So just remember, even though Texas is indeed part of the USA, for a small part of history...we too got started from across the pond.
