Non-alcoholic shops and bars are increasingly becoming a rising scene throughout Texas. But now, a new bar in Austin is looking to not just serve some of the best non-alcoholic drinks, but to elevate them using plants.

Taano Elevated Beverages is set to open Taano House in Austin's Sixth Street and will bring you the psychoactive properties of certain plans right into your cocktail- well actually, your mocktail.

What Are Psychoactive Plants?

Psychoactive plants are plants that contain chemical substances capable of affecting the central nervous system, leading to changes in mood, perception, consciousness, and behavior.

These plants have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for religious, medicinal, and recreational purposes.

Speaking to MYSA, owner Joe West spoke about the advantages of a "botanical beverage":

I wanted to create some sort of positive social space, and over time, I realized how non-conducive alcohol was for that... The more I started going down the rabbit hole, the more that I realized just how beautiful the plants were and how much opportunity there was to provide people with safe drinking alternatives.

The curated botanical drinks are made with legal psychoactive plant tinctures that emulate the experience of relaxation and euphoria that drinking patrons are used to, without the hangover and negative effects of alcohol.

Some of the plant tinctures that will be used in the cocktails are:

  • Blue Lotus
  • Wild Lettuce and Sap
  • Amanita Muscaria
  • Kanna
  • Kava

You can check out Tanno House at 1109 E. Sixth St. in Austin and keep up with them here.
