Survey Says!
A new survey list the #1 dip as "hummus". Just no. I'm not hating on hummus. I'm just saying there are better things out there, especially here in Texas. Here's the funny thing, the #1 dip in Texas, did not even make the survey. I think if we all spread the word a bit more it would be tops...then again if we stay quiet, then more for us.
Various Opinions
First off, you have to watch out where you do your research. One site listed "Corn Dip" as the #1 dip for Texas. As much as I want to lean this way because it has many "elote" like qualities, I knew I had better research further. That research took me to Food Network, who I believe got it right (that is known as "Confirmation Bias" but in this case I'm good with it).
The Winner
The answer is: Queso! Who doesn't love some some cheesy, zesty queso? Around Texas you'll find that queso is featured in all the Mexican restaurants and is an easy "go-to" dip for parties. In fact, a lot of the time, it's as simple as a can of Rotel and some Velveeta and you're good to go. Of course, you can make your queso as "extra" as you want with other ingredients and spices (I really enjoy ground sausage in mine).
The Others
We do have to tip our cowboy hats to guacamole, which is no doubt a contender. This leaves salsa, which even though we probably dip it even more than queso, is often thought of as more of a condiment. I'm sure there will be heated discussions about these three Texas favorites, but I would say no Mexican dinner is complete without all three, and any one is good for a good ol' sit down with some corn chips.
