Prepare yourself for "The Mother Of All Tumbleweeds".
The Start
I was trying the research the biggest tumbleweed ever recorded in Texas and I came up somewhat dry. We certainly have many tumbleweeds, and some real monsters. What I did find out is the largest tumbleweed every recorded was 38 feet in diameter, but I can't find out where it was located or any backstory at all. I would also like to add that if you're reading this saying, "I've seen bigger", I absolutely believe you.
Past Problems
We are far from tumbleweed season. Usually they don't start to roll around until the cooler weather hits in late fall. This would mean that we should start seeing what this years crop will look like in about three months. One year in the City Of Lubbock, the tumbleweeds were so bad that the city had to come up with special drop off points for the pesky plants. If you've ever seen the episode "Tribbles" in the original Star Trek series, then you have a pretty good idea of how bad things got.
A True Monster
What I did find was video from California of a tumbleweed the size of a Volkswagen Beetle rolling down the highway. As a resident of West Texas, I've hit many tumbleweeds and had them disintegrate immediately, or get stuck under my struck until they're worn down to nothing. I'm not sure exactly what I'd do if I had to face a tumbleweed the size of the one in the video below. People tend to forget that much like Texas, California has many climate zones and tumbleweeds are quite common in parts of the state.
