New Legislation Would Say No to Texas Schools Starting in August
Every year, I do a story on when East Texas school districts will be starting the new school year. There is usually a wide variance with some schools starting within the first week of August while others push back their first day closer to the final week of August.
Remember Back When School Started After Labor Day?
It's been a few years...okay, maybe a few decades since I went to school, but, I remember staying up late watching the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon during Labor Day Weekend.
The new school year would always start on the Tuesday following the Telethon. My memory is not as sharp as it used to be, but I don't ever recall starting school in August.
A Push to Start School in September
Republican state Representative Jared Patterson is not a fan of school districts welcoming back students in August. According to an article from WFAA, Patterson will be introducing a bill in the upcoming legislative session (January) that would push back the start of school until September, preferably after Labor Day.
Why make the change? Power consumption. Firing up AC units to cool down thousands of huge school buildings during the hottest month of the year (August) creates a massive strain on the state's power grid.
The Representative from the 106th Texas District (Frisco) argues that this will not only save power and money, but it's also a safer option for students when it comes to outdoor activities on hot playground equipment or practicing for sports or band.
What Are The Chances This Becomes a State Law?
Patterson has three kids in the Frisco School District, so he interacts with other parents and faculty. He states that the majority of those he has talked to are in favor of such a change.
He said he expects support from both sides of the aisle when the legislature convenes. However, this would be a major move with numerous ripple effects. Along with the school voucher legislation, this could be a huge hot topic (pun intended).
