Your live Christmas tree has brought so much beauty and joy to your holidays, but once the presents are opened and the bottom is bare again, what do you do with it?

Turn it into a fish habitat!

Your undecorated non-flocked tree can be recycled and turned into a new home for fish in area lakes. The City of Tyler Solid Waste Department and Keep Tyler Beautiful are providing two locations for Christmas tree recycling in Tyler this year. Beginning the day after Christmas through Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, in designated areas at Golden Road Park and Fun Forest Park in Tyler.

Recycled live Christmas trees will be available for area fisherman to pick up and sink in nearby lakes to create fish habitats. These newly created habitats attract smaller fish that will eat on aquatic insects that find a home on the once beautiful tree branches. These newly created homes for the smaller fish are also safe hiding places and allow for more fish to congregate in the same area.

When dropping off a tree for recycling - please remove all lights, ornaments, garland and tinsel and look for the 'Christmas Tree Recycling' signs in the following parks:

  • Golden Road Park - at the intersection of McDonald and Golden Road, Tyler
  • Fun Forest Park - 900 block of N. Glenwood Blvd., Tyler
