What’s The Most Popular Stolen Vehicle In Texas?

Trucks rule the Texas roads and it shouldn’t be surprising that they are the most stolen vehicle within the state of Texas. It’s the make, model and year that’s surprising when it comes the most stolen vehicle in the state.

The latest report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau shows nationally that the 1997 Honda Accord was the most stolen last year with more than 50,000 of them coming up missing. Here’s a look at the top 5 most stolen nationally:

  • 1 – 1997 Honda Accord (50,000 stolen)
  • 2 – 1998 Honda Civic (47,000 stolen)
  • 3 – 2006 Ford F-150 crew cab (32,000)
  • 4 – 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab (31,000)
  • 5 – 2016 Toyota Camry (16,000)

Now when you look at Texas alone, the top 5 list shifts dramatically in favor of trucks!

  • 1 – 2006 Ford F-150 crew cab
  • 2 – 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab
  • 3 – 2004 Dodge 1500 crew cab
  • 4 – 1996 Honda Accord
  • 5 – 2000 Honda Civic

When reviewing the list, guess I’ll be keeping a closer eye on my 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab! I’ve had this truck for nearly 12 years and don’t really want to loose it. Thankfully I don’t have my 1997 Honda Accord any longer, or it could be a double whammy for me! Thinking about it now, it’s kind of weird how I’ve owned or own the most sought after vehicles by thieves.

There are ways in which you can protect your wheels in hopes of not becoming a victim, the following are some tips from the National Insurance Crime Bureau press release:

  • Common Sense: Lock your car and take your keys. It’s simple enough, but many thefts occur because owners make it easy for thieves to steal their cars.
  • Warning Device: Having and using a visible or audible warning device is another item that can ensure that your car remains where you left it.
  • Immobilizing Device: Generally speaking, if your vehicle can’t be started, it can’t be stolen. “Kill” switches, fuel cut-offs and smart keys are among the devices that are extremely effective.
  • Tracking Device: A tracking device emits a signal to the police or to a monitoring station when the vehicle is stolen. Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles. Some systems employ “telematics,” which combine GPS and wireless technologies to allow remote monitoring of a vehicle. If the vehicle is moved, the system will alert the owner and the vehicle can be tracked via computer.

According to US Insurance Agents website, trucks have also topped the list in Texas with published reports in 2013, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005 and 2004.
