Tyler Jaycees Group Folds; Fourth of July Fireworks May Not Happen

Mandee Montana, Mix 93.1

The Tyler Jaycees Civic organization is forced to fold due to declining membership, and this could be the end of community event favorites like the annual fireworks display.

The Tyler Jaycees a civic organization created for young people who are interested in growing their leadership through serving their community. Tyler’s organization has recently disbanded, because their membership has fallen below the required minimum of 20 members. Another stipulation of the organization is youth. Members must be between the ages of 21 and 40 years of age.

Bobby Jones, prior Tyler Jaycees presiden,t told the Tyler Morning Telegraph, “There’s no chapter. There are no more members. It hurts my heart to see that happen … I guess people don’t want the responsibility.”

Because the organization has disbanded, many favorite events in Tyler are in danger of disappearing. The annual fireworks display is one month away, and it’s possible that it will not happen this year. The Jaycees are also responsible for organizing Tyler’s annual Christmas parade and the annual Easter Egg Hunt for the Blind.

“A few of us past presidents tried to breathe new air into (the organization) in 2011 and 2012, but it did not seem to last very long,” Jennifer Smith Cook, a former Jaycees president, told the Tyler Morning Telegraph. “It’s a shame, too, because it is a great organization that inspires leadership while serving your community. Provides great networking and looks good on a resume. I have made many great contacts all over the world and some life-long friendships.”

Some in the community feel that the organization may be saved if Tyler residents take an interest. For more information on the organization and how to join the Jaycees, visit their website,
