Tommy Lee Urges Fans to Adopt Pets Rather Than Purchase Them

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee is urging fans to adopt pets as opposed to purchasing them at pet stores, which get their canines from puppy mills. Those mills are facilities that provide substandard care for the breeding animals.

Lee and his lady love Sofia are proud parents to new pup Bowie, named after rock legend David Bowie because of his “crazy gray-green eyes.” The two hit local shelters in hot pursuit of a man’s best friend. “We went to a couple of different shelters and we ended up over at East Valley in Van Nuys and there he was, just sitting there with three other dogs,” Lee told Rolling Stone about finding his dog.

He continued, “And we were like, ‘Oh my God, we gotta get this guy a home. Who could abandon this f—ing thing? This is the cutest thing on the planet. I want to kill whoever let him go.” Sounds like Bowie picked Tommy and Sofia, and not the other way around! And it’s a good thing that his previous owner gave him up, since he was meant to be with the drummer.

Lee has become inspired to speak out about adoption, since there are so many homeless pets out there that need loving homes. He said, “The [shelter] is scary. It is loaded with beautiful dogs and I would highly encourage people not to buy animals from a pet store.”

Furthermore, Lee said, “If you have any compassion at all, it doesn’t take a building to fall on me to go, ‘Hey, man, look at all these amazing pets that have been abandoned or abused.’ And they have literally seven or eight days in a lot of these shelters before they get euthanized and it’s like, ‘Oh, man, you’re kidding me? No one’s come to get this dog? It’s got two days left and you’re sitting there going, ‘If I could, I would steal all of you guys.’ But I can’t.’”

While Lee is not an official spokesman for any animal cause — unlike his ex-wife Pamela Anderson, who is active with PETA — the fact that he is using his rock ‘n’ roll star power for good is certainly helping to shine a spotlight on this issue and bolster awareness. And that’s more than enough. Cori Menkin, Senior Director of the ASPCA Puppy Mill Campaign, said, “Having someone like Tommy Lee and other celebrities send this message out to their fans really raises the awareness on this issue. It’s such a huge boon.”

Lee is so in love with Bowie that he will be taking his furry friend on the road this summer when Crue tour with KISS. “The road gets pretty lonely, man, sometimes,” he said. “It kind of gets repetitive sometimes, so having your little buddy with you is gonna be ripping, man. I can’t wait.”

Bowie is one lucky pup. Perhaps fans will make his acquaintance on The Tour, since something tells us he’ll be right by Lee’s side as his wing pup the entire time.
