The Black Keys have logged 54 shows already this year, and they’re only halfway through their planned tour schedule in support of ‘El Camino.’ There are plenty of festival dates — such as Catalpa in New York, Firefly in Delaware, Lollapalooza in Chicago and Austin City Limits — on the horizon. Despite all that current and future touring, drummer Patrick Carney reveals that the band was flashed by a fan for the very first time while on their current run of dates.

“The weirdest thing that’s happened on this tour is it’s the first time we’ve ever experienced women flashing us,”  the rhythm keeper tells Rolling Stone. There’s a first time for everything, and fans tend to let loose at a rock show. Carney also reveals that the flashing took place in the Great White North.

“Only in Canada, though,” he says. “It only happens in Canada.” He also admits there is no obvious reason for the lack of U.S. females flashing he and bandmate Dan Auerbach, saying, “I don’t know what’s different up there. But it’s really far. You kind of feel like that shouldn’t be happening.”

Carney doesn’t mind being flashed, simply because “I can’t see it. I didn’t even have my glasses on. But my drum tech will tell me what’s going on.”

It appears flashing is not the best way to nab Patrick Carney’s attention, though. The fastest way to his heart is through his belly. “The best way to catch my attention is to throw a Twinkie near my face,” he jokes. “I don’t know. The only way to catch my attention really is if my monitor goes out or if something really f—ed up happens onstage.”

Carney actually had something really messed up happen to him as a kid involving a stage, only he wasn’t on it. He went to see indie rock icon Jon Spencer at 16. He left a tape he made with friends on the stage, next to the rocker’s mic stand, by the pedal board. But Spencer wasn’t appreciative of the gift. “He pulled it out with his foot, kicked it to the center of the stage, looked me in the eye and stomped it to pieces,” Carney recalls. “I can still see his white loafers and satin pants coming down on the f—ing tape.” That one left a mark.

Even so, Carney has crossed paths with Spencer since, when the Keys opened for him. “I didn’t bring it up, though,” he says. Interestingly enough, Spencer would probably be the one opening for the Black Keys at this point!

In other Keys news, the band is headed to the studio in July. “We don’t know when we’ll be done but we’re starting it in July,” he says. “We might not finish it until March since we have to tour so much but we’ll see. We don’t know what’s going on. After July, we’ll be able to know how long it’ll take.”
