Few bands are more revered in indie-rock circles than Sonic Youth, fronted by longtime married couple and bandmates Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. So the announcement this weekend that the couple is going their separate ways after 27 years sent fans into a tizzy.

A statement from their rep said:

Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.

Gordon, 58, and Moore, 53, founded the group in 1980 and married in 1984. They live in Northampton, Massachusetts and have one child, 17-year-old Coco, who’s a singer with the local band Big Nils.

Sonic Youth’s sixteenth album ‘The Eternal’ was released in 2009.
