Salmonella concerns prompted Flowers Food to issue a voluntary recall of Swiss Rolls under several brand names as well as bread distributed in several southern states.

The Swiss Roll brands affected are Mrs. Freshley's, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker's Treat, Market Square and Great Value, all of which were distributed nationwide. Also affected is Captain John Derst's Old Fashioned Bread distributed in Alabama, Georgia, Florida and both North and South Carolina.

Flowers Foods stated the recall was prompted over concerns that an ingredient, whey powder, may have salmonella. It was initiated by a third party that manufactures the powder.

It is advised to throw away the product or to return to the store where purchased for a refund. Below is a list of the recalled products with UPC and best buy dates:

There have been no reports of illness to date in connection with the recall.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
