The list of September 2017 new music releases is marked by one heartfelt goodbye and the long-awaited returns of a few huge stars.

Gregg Allman's posthumous Southern Blood, recorded during the period leading up to his death earlier this year, became something of a homecoming. The Don Was-produced sessions found Allman returning with his touring band to Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Ala. Elsewhere, Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian and Joe Bonamassa are back with a Black Country Communion reunion for BCCIV.

Michael McDonald ends a lengthy drought for new music. Wide Open is his first full-length effort since 2008's Soul Speak and his first new material since the 2013 EP Unfinished Business, a collaboration with guitarist Robben Ford. By contrast, Van Morrison's 37th studio album, Roll With the Punches, arrives roughly a year after his most recent album, Keep Me Singing.

Ringo Starr's Give More Love is highlighted by a reunion with former Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney, as well as songs featuring Joe Walsh, Edgar Winter, Steve Lukather (who appears on a number of Give More Love songs), Peter Frampton and Walsh's fellow Eagles member Timothy B. Schmit. David Gilmour's historic return to Pompeii in 2016 is featured in a new CD/DVD/Blu-ray package.

Motörhead's Under Cöver includes a never-before-heard version of David Bowie's "Heroes" from 2015, the same year frontman Lemmy Kilmister died of cancer, along with other previously issued cover songs. Foo Fighters return with Concrete and Gold, their first full-length since 2014's Sonic Highways – though they issued a free five-song EP titled Saint Cecilia in November 2015.

Among reissues, Ace Frehley is offering a newly expanded deluxe edition of his 2009 album Anomaly, while Alice Cooper's 1976 concert movie Welcome to My Nightmare has been updated for a special edition that also includes the 1975 TV special Alice Cooper: The Nightmare.
