ILMxLAB, an offshoot of Lucasfilm, has been quietly experimenting with new ways of storytelling for the virtual reality age recently, from an augmented reality video featuring C-3PO and R2-D2 to plans for a Darth Vader-centric VR story. Now, ahead of Rogue One’s premiere, the company has partnered with Verizon to unveil a new “360 experience” entitled Rogue One: Recon. (For best results, watch the above video on your tablet or phone.)

Rogue One: Recon is a short little video, less than two minutes long, but it packs a ton of information into its small runtime. The viewer is put into the position of Scout 3, a Rebel X-wing pilot who is on a reconnaissance mission around a supposedly empty star system, when suddenly he and his squadron hyper-jump right into the middle of a fleet of Star Destroyers. And past that fleet is something that looks less like a spaceship and more like a moon with a bite taken out of it. “It’s too big to be a space station!” one of the other pilots says. Ah, but we know exactly what it is.

The video lets us see the very first time the Rebels come into contact with the Empire’s secret, terrible weapon. We assume that Mon Mothma gets word of the Empire’s coordinates, so that she and the other Rebel forces can start forming a plan to take the Death Star down from the inside. There are tons of cool little details in the video too: If you look “down” you can see yourself in an X-wing pilot’s orange suit, and if you turn around you can say hey to your ship’s R4 unit. The actual 360 experience will be available exclusively in Samsung Gear VR Headsets that you can get at your local Verizon store.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens December 16.
