We've got lots of home builders, truck drivers, barbecue chefs, and CEOs in Texas, but there's one job that's overly popular compared to all the others.

It may not be the most common job, but it's the most over-represented since there is a higher concentration of this job in Texas than anywhere else in the US.  It's not Motor Boat Operator.  Florida has an over-abundant population of those.  New Jersey has a lot of Shampooers, and Nebraska's supply of Meat Cutters and Trimmers is more concentrated than any other state.

In Texas, the most disproportionately popular job is the Petroleum Engineer.  Do you know someone who works in the oil and gas industry?  Me too.  We've got plenty of oil fields, and plenty of brain power (especially in Dallas and Houston) to work in equipment design for the fields, compliance and safety, and extracting the resources too.  It's a huge industry, and it's well-concentrated in Texas.

Business Insider put out a map that's based on per capita, and concluded by location what jobs are most out-of-proportion with the rest of the country.  Food Processing workers in Iowa, Food Scientists in Minnesota, and Petroleum Workers in Texas.

Every state has plenty of accountants and doctors, but Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Wyoming, and North Dakota rule when comes to petroleum-related jobs.  If you've got those skills, Texas is a great place to be.
