Paul McCartney Joined Onstage by Surviving Members of Nirvana

It’s been years since Kurt Cobain‘s death ended Nirvana‘s promising career, but the group’s music is still closely identified with Seattle. So it only makes sense that when Paul McCartney played his first-ever concert in the city’s Safeco Stadium, he invited the surviving members of Nirvana to join him.

This isn’t the first time the former Beatle has performed with ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear; last year, they came together for a new song, ‘Cut Me Some Slack,’ which they recorded for the ‘Sound City‘ soundtrack, and then played ‘Saturday Night Live‘ and the 12.12.12 concert for Hurricane Sandy relief. Fittingly, ‘Slack’ was the first number the quartet performed at Safeco on July 19. But they didn’t stop there.

This time around, McCartney and his guests added some extra songs to their repertoire, launching into an encore set that included the Beatles classics ‘Get Back,’ ‘Helter Skelter,’ ‘Golden Slumbers,’ ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘The End,’ as well as Little Richard’s ‘Long Tall Sally’ (covered by the Beatles in 1964). Check out fan-shot footage of the ‘Sally’ portion of the set above.

McCartney is clearly having fun on his ‘Out There’ tour (check out our review of his Milwaukee stop here), but fans also have new music to look forward to. As we recently reported, he’s started work on his first collection of original material since 2007′s ‘Memory Almost Full.’
