9-Year-Old Boy Under Fire For Accidental Shooting [VIDEO]

AP

A 9-year-old boy in Port Orchard, Wash., brought a gun to school in his backpack last week, which resulted in a tragic accident.

As the boy sat his backpack down, the gun went off and shot an 8-year-old classmate. The young boy is being charged of three major charges that could land this young boy in juvenile for many years, and he didn’t even pull the trigger.

Amina Bowman, 8, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after the gun went off, according to police. Amina was alert and stable at the time of the incident and was quickly rushed to surgery. She remains in critical condition and will face surgeries in the next few weeks, although she has interacted with her parents. It is believed that the boy got possession of the gun during a weekend visit with his mother.

The unnamed boy has been charged with unlawful possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault. Children in Washington state between ages 8 and 12 can be charged if they are deemed to understand wrongdoing. The boy’s bail dropped from $250,000 to $50,000.

A Washington state prosecutor says his office will seek probation and treatment for a 9-year-old boy who took to school a gun that accidentally discharged and critically injured a classmate this past week. He said prosecutors hope to hold the boy accountable not through incarceration, but rather probation, treatment and other services.

The debate stirring around this case is figuring out who exactly is at fault for this. Is it the young boy’s fault for taking a gun to school? Or is it his parents fault for not protecting their weapons and giving the boy access? Do you think the charges against the boy are valid, even though he didn’t actually pull the trigger? Should his parents face legal charges and be held responsible for this horrific accident?
