ROME (AP) — Get back on the boat. That was the order from the Italian coast guard to the captain of a cruise ship that turned on its side after hitting rocks along the Italian coast on Friday. On an audio tape that was made public today, an angry coast guard officer is heard demanding that the captain -- who was on a lifeboat at the time -- return to the ship to oversee the rescue and evacuation. The captain resisted. He's now in custody, facing charges in the wreck that has now claimed at least 11 lives.

Boating Accident Victim Identified

NOONDAY - Smith County Authorities have identified the man who died on Lake Palestine while his wife held on to a float until rescuers freed her from the waters. 58 year Floyd Cooper of Lancaster was found near the couples overturned boat. His wife 55 Barbara Cooper is hospitalized at ETMC in fair condition. Precinct Two Justice of the Peace Gary Alfred has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Coopers death.

Body Discovered in Movie Theater

DENVER (AP) — Family members are waiting for answers about how the body of a 66-year-old Colorado man went unnoticed in a locked movie theater restroom for about five days after he died there. A coroner says George DeGrazio died of a heart attack, apparently while using the bathroom. The body wasn't found until about five days later, when theater workers noticed an odor from the restroom and forced their way in.

Atomic Clocks in Discussion

GENEVA (AP) — Countries are expected to decide this week whether to drop the practice of adding leap seconds to keep atomic clocks in sync with the Earth day. A U.S.-backed proposal would allow atomic clocks to run adjusted for the planet's irregular rotation. But Britain, Canada, China and some astronomers oppose the plan.

 

Texas Gov. Slams Obama

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Governor Rick Perry said during last night's Republican presidential debate in South Carolina that the Obama administration is intruding on states' rights. The Texas governor said the most egregious example of federal government overreach was the National Labor Relations Board intervening in a right to work state. He was referring to a ruling against Boeing, which moved production from Washington to South Carolina.

 

Wikipedia to Go Dark in Protest to SOPA

(AP) - Wikipedia will black out the English language version of its website tomorrow to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress. The foundation behind the popular community based online encyclopedia said the website will go dark for 24 hours in an unprecedented move that brings added strength to a growing base of critics of the legislation. If passed the legislation would harm the free and open internet and introduce new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States..

 

Border Patrol Changing Methods

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The U.S. Border Patrol is overhauling its revolving-door approach on migrants caught illegally crossing the Mexican border. The agency will announce within weeks that it's toughening up its policy on returning illegal border-crossers. A key portion is a new color-coded system that categorizes detained migrants based on their number of crossing attempts or criminal history.

 

Horse Frightens Crowd at Dallas MLK Parade

DALLAS (AP) — A runaway horse threw a scare into a crowd watching a Dallas parade marking the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The rider-less horse broke away from its owner Monday and galloped down side streets before returning to the parade route. Police Lt. Scott Walton says two people suffered minor injuries and one vehicle was damaged before the horse was reined in and hitched to an iron fence. Meanwhile, Texans elsewhere joined other Americans on Monday in honoring King's memory 44 years after the civil rights leader was assassinated.

 

Government Set to Fight Alzheimer's

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government says it wants to use the next dozen or so years to make a dent in Alzheimer's disease. The Obama administration is developing the first National Alzheimer's Plan to find better treatments and offer better day-to-day care for those afflicted. The goal is for significant improvement by 2025. A two-day meeting of Alzheimer's experts begins today.
