Coffee is good for anti-oxidants and now we hear from a new study in Finland it may also protect against liver damage.

A new study is now finding that coffee drinking helps protect the liver from damage, including that caused by alcohol. Researcher Dr. Onni Niemelä, of Seinäjoki Central Hospital and the University of Tampere in Finland have been doing extensive studies of the enzyme gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT).

Drinking alcohol raises levels of GGT in the blood and helps males but not females. The doctors say the study is astonishing.

But, according to the study, men who were heavy drinkers, and those who also drank five or more cups of coffee each day showed a 50 percent reduction in GGT compared with men who drank no coffee.
