New Largemouth Bass Record Set at Lake Palestine

Larry Hodge, Texas Parks and Wildlife

Lake Palestine, home of the Big Bass Bash, produced its second Toyota ShareLunker largemouth bass in less than a year Saturday — and with a new lake record.

Rowlett’s Casey Laughlin hauled in a 13.22-pound largemouth bass, .08 ounces heavier than Sonny Booth’s 13.14-pounder he caught in March of 2013. Booth’s fish set a new Lake Palestine record after Ronald Ebaugh’s 12.51-pound largemouth bass held the top lake spot for 22 years.

Laughlin’s bass was initially weighed in at 13.02 pounds by tournament officials, but when weighed on the official ShareLunker scale, it came in at 13.22 and enough for a new record.

Bass must weigh at least 13 pounds to qualify for the ShareLunker program, making Laughlin’s bass only the second ShareLunker in recorded history on Lake Palestine.

The Texas record for a largemouth bass was set in 1992 when Barry StClair caught an 18.18-pound bass at Lake Fork, also in East Texas. Seven of the 10 biggest bass in Texas history, including the top six, were caught at Lake Fork.

The second annual Big Bass Bash is April 12-13 at Lake Palestine, with a $10,000 grand prize going to the winner. That doesn’t include thousands of dollars that will be paid out to hourly winners, plus a whole lot more!
