Wasn’t it supposed to be the drummer that always suffered the misfortune in Spinal Tap? That wasn’t the case on Tuesday as ‘This is Spinal Tap’ actor Michael McKean, who played the role of frontman David St. Hubbins in the cult mockumentary film about a heavy metal band, was struck by a car in Manhattan.

The 64-year-old actor was hospitalized after the incident and the New York Daily News later reported that his condition had been upgraded from critical to stable. He suffered a broken leg in the accident as well as cuts and bruising. The actor’s wife, former ‘Smallville’ star Annette O’Toole, was flying from Los Angeles after hearing of the accident.

McKean was in New York performing at the Schoenfeld Theatre in the Gore Vidal production, ‘The Best Man.’ His publicist, Harriet Sternberg, told the paper, “It’s the first time he will have ever missed a curtain in his entire life.

The actor’s credits also include his star-making role on the ’70s sitcom ‘Laverne and Shirley,’ a season as a cast member on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and as part of another fictional onscreen group, the Folksmen, in the film ‘A Mighty Wind.’ But it’s his role as David St. Hubbins in Spinal Tap for which heavy metal fans love him. Due to the mass popularity of the film, Spinal Tap went from fictional band to actual band, as they’ve embarked on several tours over the years.
