The world of music may have just found its new favorite anti-hero, as gothic vocalist and self-professed metalhead Andrew De Leon wowed the nation on the latest episode of ‘America’s Got Talent.’ De Leon, 19, spoke about growing up as a fan of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, which set up a completely unexpected performance from the teen singer.

Before his singing was broadcast for the ‘America’s Got Talent’ audience, the show allowed De Leon to share some of his background. “Growing up, I was huge fan of Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie and all these different rock stars,” says De Leon. “They really became an escape for someone like me, who felt that I was an outsider. Growing up, I was alienated because I was never interested in athletics or what everybody else in my family was interested in. Singing was always an escape. It was always a comfort zone.”

As De Leon took the stage gothed out with black makeup around his eyes and light blue contact lenses, all preconceptions of the teen vanished as he began singing opera. De Leon’s soaring voice, which is completely self-taught, blew the judges and the crowd away.

After getting a standing ovation from both the studio audience and the judges Howard Stern, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel, De Leon claimed, “I’m just so used to being rejected. I’m not really good at anything … so this is amazing.”

The judges were even more impressed as the teen singer revealed that this was his first time performing in front of anyone, and that not even his parents had heard his voice. Needless to say, Andrew De Leon got three “yes” votes from the judges and will surely be seen much more as the competition goes on.
