Word began circulating Monday that rapper Kanye West was keen to record a tribute album to one of his heroes - the iconic David Bowie.

But the internet is having none of it.

Despite the fact that Kanye is clearly an unabashed fan and, perhaps, has only the best of intentions, the thought of him recording "straight-forward cover versions with Kanye actually singing" songs like Rebel, Rebel, Changes and Heroes has a circle of music fans cringing hard.

A petition has began circulating online to stop Kanye from releasing the "potential travesty".

The petition leader reads, in part:  "David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West."

Equally cringe-worthy (but in true Kanye-style), the UK's Daily Mirror reports that an unnamed insider says, "(Kanye West) is determined to carry on David's work as a musical innovator. He says that the torch has been passed to him."

While the potential album is purely speculative with only "un-named sources" used as, well...sources, others have countered the petition with a simple solution.

Reddit /u/Nekovive makes a good point:  "I don't see the point of the petition. A better petition would simply be not buying the album if it means so much to you."

No one is denying Kanye West's talent but it might be best if Kanye just does Kanye and leaves David Bowie out of it.

Also, equally amusing is recent news of David Bowie's one-time refusal to collaborate with Coldplay.

According to NME, vocalist Chris Martin once wrote to Bowie, asking him to contribute harmonies to a song.  Bowie passed.

When Chris pressed him for a reason why, David responded,  "Well, it's just not a very good song, is it?"

In this case, Coldplay took the response in stride and loved Bowie's candor.  Says drummer Will Champion, “He was very discerning. He wouldn’t just put his name to anything."

No word from Coldplay, however, if they scrapped that proposed song because Bowie told them it was crap.  They aren't saying - and we wouldn't either.
