Hostess has been making Twinkies and snack cakes since the 1930s, and the company has announced now they're going out of business. Twinkies are about to become a thing of the past!

The company is based in Irving, and with the closure more than 18,500 workers will lose their jobs.

Why the closure? It has to do with competition in the snack market, plus Americans are getting more health conscious and becoming less likely to go for the cake-filled snacks. Hostess also makes Dolly Madison, Drake's and Nature's Pride snacks.

Hostess has been through bankruptcy proceedings twice, but made the decision to shut down entirely late Thursday. All employees have been notified they'll lose their jobs eventually, some sooner than others.

Hostess Twinkies are about to go the way of the dinosaur and become extinct. A piece of pop culture history, gone! Savor those last few bites.
