A portion of Texas State Highway 31 through Gregg County could have a different designation.

WIth more than 9000 military veterans living in Gregg County, a movement is underway in Gregg County to rename the portion of Highway 31 between the Kilgore and Longview city limits to be renamed the 'Veterans Memorial Highway' after Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt was approached by a group of veterans inquiring about the ability of a change like this and a way to honor all the service men and women of our nation and area and to show support for them.

According to the Longview News Journal, Judge Stoudt has received a verbal agreement for this proposed idea from Kilgore Mayor Ronnie Spradlin and Longview Mayor Andy Mack to designate this stretch of Texas State Highway 31 as the 'Veterans Memorial Highway'. There is an approval process that this proposal must go through at the Texas Department of Transportation that could take a few months.

If approved by TxDOT, Judge Stoudt says that the state would pay for road signage with the new designation.

Judge Stoudt tells CBS 19, "I think it's a awful small thank you but it's coming straight from the heart."
