FX X-Men drama Legion has understandably pulled focus for its February premiere, but what of Burn Notice creator Matt Nix’s FOX series, which was said to feature a couple with mutant children on the run? Reports indicate a pilot order is heating up, while Nix himself previews the untitled series’ place within the X-Men films.

First and foremost, Deadline claims that “Early versions of the script had been received enthusiastically at Fox,” with a final draft and script order potentially arriving in the next few weeks. Some “exploratory casting” has also already taken place, while the series itself follows two human parents who discover their children as mutants, forcing them to run from a hostile government, and join with an underground network of mutants to survive.

Nix wrote the series, and also clarified its relationship to the films from the TCA press tour (via IGN):

Without getting into specifics that I’ll get murdered for getting into, I would say that a fan of the movies – particularly the movies, but also the comic books – would not be disoriented at all as to where this fits in the mythology. I guess I’d say that if you look at the movies, which take place from whatever, they started in 2000 to now… they don’t all line up perfectly. You know what I mean? So it’s not like, I’m not slavishly fitting myself into a particular slot. But at the same time, if you like that world, if you like the world of the movies, there are definite nods to it. It definitely exists in the same general kind of universe, if that makes sense. […]

I guess I’d say in a sort of general way it acknowledges that events like the events that have happened in the movies have happened, you know what I mean? But it’s not to date… it’s still evolving. We’ll see how much that comes in. It’s certainly not “Since this happened in X-Men Apocalypse now all of these things are happening!”, which I think is cool, but they already did that. […}

It’s sort of designed to side step questions like, “Where is Wolverine?” You sort of have to answer those questions. I didn’t want to do anything like, “Wolverine is just off screen!” It exists in a world where those questions are answered without needing to name a lot of names or spend a lot of time dwelling on those issues.

It remains unclear if the “underground network of mutants” reference the Morlocks of X-Men lore, but we should hear more in the coming weeks. What new territory might a FOX X-Men drama explore?
