For the first time in 13 years, the FDA has approved a pill for weight-loss. The BBC reports the medication called, Belviq, can be used by obese or overweight adults. In studies, it helped people lose about 5% of their body weight.

The drug was rejected back in 2010 because of concerns over tumors that developed in animals that were given the drug. Arena Pharmaceutical re-submitted the application for the drug with more data. The FDA found little risk for tumors in humans who use the drug.

Belviq is designed to block appetite signals in the brain, making patients feel fuller with smaller amounts of food. The medication is not expected to be released to the public until 2013.
