You've already seen pumpkins at the grocery store and by the side of the road. Now that we've had a breath of cool air, we're ready to think about fall decorating, hayrides and pumpkin carving.

If you just want a pumpkin, your cheapest option is probably to pick one up at your Neighborhood Wal-Mart in Tyler, Longview or any other East Texas town where carving pumpkins are running $4.88. Fresh by Brookshire's in Tyler already has gorgeous specialty pumpkins and gourds that look like they came straight out of a fairytale. However, there's just something special about going to a pumpkin patch that signals the real start of fall. Here are a few of the choices open now.

Yesterland Farm in Canton

For many families, this Canton establishment has long been a family tradition. This year it opened September 29, so if you go now you'll find a huge selection of pumpkins to choose from.

Yesterland Farm is on I-20. In addition to pumpkins, they have Christmas trees, rides, a three-acre corn maze, farm animals and more.

At night their Fright Farm includes glowing goblin pumpkins, a paintball gun course and Chuckle's Fun House. Their website says it's creepy, not gory and recommended for kids ages 8 and up.

Texas State Railroad in Rusk

October 6-28, the Texas State Railroad in Rusk has a 90-minute layover at a pumpkin patch. The 30-minute train ride has departures at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Kids are encouraged to wear "their Halloween finest" and enjoy hayrides, seasonal music and pumpkin picking.

Moore Farms in Bullard

This Smith County farm offers farm fresh produce and entertainment. Moore Farms opened for 2018 pumpkin picking on September 29. They have hayrides, mazes and a barn full of fall decor.

Callie's Acre in Gilmer

The 2018 Pumpkin Patch runs from October 1 through November 4. Their website advertises hayrides, a playground, photo ops, tug of war, a spider web and a barnyard. Admission is only $5 and they're available for field trips and events.

Rose City Farmer's Market and East Texas State Fair Farmer's Market both offer regular orange carving pumpkins, fall squash, heirloom and specialty pumpkins from local growers. Several area churches also offer pumpkins like Lane's Chapel United Methodist Church on Old Jacksonville and First Christian Church on the corner of Loop 323 and Broadway.
