Trial Begins for Nurse Accused of Killing Patients with Bleach

Angelina Co Jail

LUFKIN — A 38-year-old East Texas nurse is facing a possible death sentence as she goes on trial today for injecting patients with bleach — killing five and injuring five others — as they were undergoing dialysis treatment.

Kimberly Saenz  was fired in April 2008 from her job at a DaVita Dialysis clinic in Lufkin ,after two patients told officials they saw her inject two other patients with bleach.

By then, state health inspectors already were looking into why paramedics that month had to make so many trips to the clinic to help people with cardiac and breathing problems.

Saenz has pleaded not guilty. Her lawyer says she’s a scapegoat for problems at the clinic.

The End of Neighborhood Pharmacies?

GIDDINGS — A new law could make small, independent pharmacies go the way of the neighborhood grocer, the local bookshop and the corner music store.

The new Medicaid prescription drug program pays a private company, called a pharmacy benefit manager, to keep costs low by reimbursing pharmacies 80 percent less for filling prescriptions and negotiating the cheapest possible drug prices. The program is expected to save taxpayers between $83 and $100 million over the next two years.

But small pharmacies say they won’t make enough money to stay in business. They’ve tried filing a lawsuit to fight the new law, but so far with little success.

Proponents say the changes are necessary to bring Medicaid costs down and to balance the state budget.

The new law took effect on Thursday.
