Death Penalty Sought for Eric Williams in Kaufman County Murders

Kaufman County

State prosecutors announced Friday they are seeking the death penalty in the case against former Justice of the Peace Eric Williams, who is charged with capital murder of three people in Kaufman County.

Williams is charged in the deaths of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, and Kaufman County assistant prosecutor Mark Hasse. According to KLTV-7 in Tyler, the decision has not been made whether to seek the death penalty for Williams’ wife, Kim Williams.

Authorities believe Eric Williams was the one who shot and killed all three people, while his wife was an accomplice in both instances. Hasse was shot and killed while walking to the Kaufman County courthouse on Jan. 31 this year, and the McLelland’s were killed inside their home on March 30.

Williams was originally arrested and charged with terroristic threats and was later charged with capital murder — one day after his wife was charged with the same crime. Kim Williams is still being held on $10 million bond.

Officials believe previous legal troubles involving Eric Williams may have been motive for the crimes. He was prosecuted and convicted in 2012 for stealing computer equipment from the county and was fired from his job.
