It’s that time of year, when Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz stokes the fires of a fifth season on Netflix, but Season 4 may yet bring bigger news. The former Bluth manager reveals that Season 4 has been entirely re-worked into 22 episodes, reshoots and all, hoping to find somewhere to air.

Hurwitz spoke to Esquire of Season 4 star Maria Bamford’s new Netflix series Lady Dynamite, in the process dropping a few requisite updates on the state of future Arrested Development. In particular, Hurwitz again pointed to the cast’s increasingly disparate schedule, noting how topical plans like Lindsay’s border wall, national murder-mystery obsession and more became:

I spent some time in the writers room developing an outline for the next season or seasons if we’re able to make a deal. I’m trying very hard to get it done because we have a great story to tell. The clock is ticking. We were putting up a wall before Trump was. There were so many things like that. We had a political race that was going to continue in the fifth season. A lot of people thought what Trump was doing was the more they try to self destruct because they don’t want office, the more the crowd gathers around them. Which was a viable theory about Trump. […]

We were also building to a murder mystery and we were laying all these clues, and it was before there was this sudden interest in true crime with [Robert] Durst, Making a Murderer, and OJ. And there were so many OJ references in the fourth season. We even had Gob find a perfectly good OJ Simpson in the dumpster behind the wax museum. He was, like, driving around with this OJ Simpson and that was going to fit into the murder plot. But we’ll find new things. I’m trying, man.

Granted, we’d heard most of that before, as well the intent to recut Season 4 into a more familiar format, but Hurwitz also offered an update on Season 5's timeline, as well the first we’d heard of Season 4’s full 22-episode recut (up from 15), or an intent to air them somewhere:

It’ll happen. It’ll definitely happen. Not before the election, but it’s definitely going to happen. I say that because the actors want to do it, the studio wants to do it, Netflix wants to do it, I want to do it. It’s just making it happen. There’s no one resisting. There’s a recut, too, of the fourth season, just to make it airable on TV. They’re like the old Arrested Developments. We redid all the narration and reshot a few little things. Now we have 22 episodes, and they’re delightful to watch and they’re much less work than the Netflix series. My hope is we’ll find a place to air those.

It remains to be seen if Netflix would agree to air the new episodes somewhere else, rather than stream, but which new Arrested Development should we look more forward to?
