Alice in Chains Reveal Release Date, Album Art + Track Listing for ‘The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here’
Alice in Chains have unveiled the official release date, cover art and track listing for their fifth studio album, 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here.' The new Alice in Chains disc will become available on May 28 (not May 14, as previously reported), and guitarist Jerry Cantrell has offered some interesting insight on the concept behind the disc's name and its title track.
Always looking to challenge their audience, Alice in Chains would only allow the new cover art to be seen if fans tweeted a message from the band's official website. Revealed was the massive skull of a triceratops against a red background, accompanying simple black text, which appears to be the official album cover. In addition, a hidden image was also revealed showing two triceratops skulls forming a devil's head.
The title 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here' refers to a belief held by some religious individuals that to confuse the masses of humanity, Satan himself planted dinosaur bones deep into the Earth to dissuade the faithful.
In a new interview with Revolver magazine, Jerry Cantrell was asked about the lyrics, "The devil put dinosaurs here / Jesus don’t like a queer / No problem with faith / Just fear," found in the new album's title track. “What’s the old joke? Cantrell responds. "There are two things you never want to get into a conversation or argument about: politics and religion. But f---, I guess we’re going to be talking about this for awhile [Laughs].”
“Read a f---ing paper," adds Cantrell. “What I’ve seen is the most basic message to most faith systems is in contradiction with how it gets applied. The human element seems to f--- it up. It seems to f--- up the basic truths of acceptance, loving your brother, helping each other out, not trying to kill each other or steal each other’s s--t. Those are all pretty good ideas. And most of your major religions have those things as basic tenets of the belief system. It always amazes me that some of the most hateful and hurtful things are done in the name of some sort of belief system.”
The current Alice in Chains single 'Hollow' has already impacted radio in a big way, and fans won't have to wait until May 14 for another taste of music from 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here.' The new single 'Stone' will become available digitally on March 26.
