For Aerosmith, the Donington Park locale of their upcoming concert film has always had a deeper meaning -- both because of its history and because of its stench.

"Just to be invited to play at Donington has always been special," guitarist Brad Whitford said in a teleconference promoting Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014. "It just has a magic about it. We were excited just to be there. It didn't dawn on us right away, or we didn't plan it right away to make a movie out of it but to be able to capture that moment like we did was great, because it does hold a special place for all of us rock 'n' rollers."

Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 documents the band’s stop at 2014's Download Festival, with a set that brings you as close as you can get to the Donington action without actually smelling it.

And what a smell it is, bassist Tom Hamilton added.

"The band was so tight that night," he said. "Yet we could relax and have fun and get off on the insane crowd there." Hamilton expanded on the distinct nature of the Donington fans. "Every time we've been there, it's probably been the funkiest, most earthy audience on the tour. Usually the crowd's been there a few days, and it's been raining a few days. Last time, it rained all the way through the opening act, but then it stopped raining -- we're lucky that way. But the audience gets a distinct aroma, between the mud and the folks who thought it was too far to go to the porta-cans. It's great. It smells like being on a farm."

Whitford seemed particularly proud of the unvarnished nature of Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014, which arrives in U.S. movie theaters on Feb. 26.

"It's actually a great way to see or relive a concert, because we do our best when it's a live performance to make it have the visual impact and the sonic impact that it has," Whitford said. "But when we do something like this, you get a chance to revisit the mix -- and that allows you the opportunity to really make it sparkle. Sometimes, stuff live will get lost or cluttered. On this particular show, you are hearing it exactly as it happened. Nothing has been fixed or repaired, just sonically enhanced. If you weren't there and you go see this in the theater, you will see something that's as good as it can possibly be represented."

Aerosmith presented a career-spanning 19-song show at Donington during the Download Festival on June 15, 2014. They previously played there in 1990 and 1994, when the site was home to the Monsters of Rock music festival.
