Smith County Authorities are warning the public of a possible phone scam. The caller is asking citizens for donations to fund a Blue Santa Program. The caller is soliciting the funds on behalf of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department, Peace officers Association, and the Department of Public Safety. The law enforcement agencies do not solicit donations by phone and residents should always use caution when receiving solicitation calls for donations from any organization over the phone.

 

(AP) — Experts are convening in Houston to discuss the health of the Gulf of Mexico and the future of its ecosystem. The summit opened Monday with a presentation from Lisa Jackson of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The event concludes on Thursday.

 

A Harrison County man accused of pouring a cleaning solution on two people is jailed on aggravated assault and family violence charges. 39 year old Galen Wallace who was wanted by Harrison County deputies was arrested after authorities found him sleeping in an abandoned vehicle he was using for shelter. The warrants stemmed from last months assault that left Brittany Brice and Donald Salley Hospitalized..

 

An undercover narcotics operation aboard an Amtrak train in Dallas has left one person dead and two people shot including an off duty officer and a passenger from East Texas..Police say the officer was shot in the hand and the 29 year old passenger was wounded..The suspect involved in the shooting died at the scene. A Dallas Police spokesperson said details of the shooting remain under investigation.

 

Firefighters in Jacksonville are being credited for saving the life of an 86 year old woman after a fire broke out in the home Monday.

Authorities said rescuers were able to locate the woman in a bedroom. The woman was treated and released. Two other family members including a five year old child were able to escape the fire which officials say was contained to one room. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

(AP) — Price gouging on prescription drugs that are in short supply would become a federal crime under legislation about to be introduced.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., says he's proposing a bill that that would give the U.S. Department of Justice authority to crack down on drug distributors who sell life-saving prescription medicines in short supply to hospitals at huge markups.
