Nearly 70 dogs were rescued from a puppy mill located in Harrison County.

Harrison County Constable Robert Wood, who made the discovery, said the puppies and a few adult dogs were being kept in portable buildings with little ventilation and were living in what he called “deplorable, filthy conditions.”

Wood said a tip led him to the location on Drisckell Bridge Road, where a strong odor was coming from the property. Most of the dogs were being housed in cages, one dog died and the rest were taken by trailer to the Fort Worth Humane Society, where they will be brought back to health and could be put up for adoption after a court hearing yet to be scheduled.

Wood said the owner moved to Odessa and put a person in charge of taking care of the dogs. No citations have been issued pending a hearing.

The majority of the breeds of dogs were Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Pomeranians and one Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
